Understanding the Seven Spirits of YHVH
in the seven churches and in each believer
When I want to know what the Word says about a word or phrase I go to an online Bible site and do a keyword search. This is one way to learn more about certain subjects and get a good understanding of the context in which they are used. This practice has helped to deepen my understanding of the commandments of YHVH and how He performs His works through His saints. The seven spirits of YHVH is one of those subjects. I also use a free program called E-sword with Strong's Hebrew and Greek definitions for each word.
Understanding the seven spirits really begins by hearing the truth and being filled with the Spirit of YHVH. One of the seven spirits that comes with the Spirit filling is the fear of YHVH. Most people know it as the fear of the Lord. I just like to use the Lord’s personal Hebrew name. Very simply, the fear of YHVH means the very deepest reverence, deference and obeisance of who YHVH is and what He can do. The Bible says he is the vinedresser and Jesus is the vine. YHVH prunes the branches of the vine to bear more perfect and abundant fruit. Pruning is done by a reprimand here and a reprimand there. Reprimands come through the Word, through other people or a revelatory thought. If the wood of a branch remains dead the Lord’s pruning shears will cut it out. The Bible says He will destroy those who do not listen in obeisance. Does that sound mean and unfair? I am sure it does to those who disdain submitting their self centeredness to Him.
We have a perfect example of reverence and obeisance in Jesus Christ. Jesus was anointed in the seven spirits and the Bible says he loved the fear of YHVH (Isaiah 11:1-3). His love and submission to his Father is total. Jesus has a kind of symbiotic relationship with YHVH. “Jesus said the Father is in him and he is in the Father.” People have made his statement to mean many things, except what is really means. Jesus was born human with a finite spirit. His Father’s Spirit is infinite. They are dissimilar in that respect but share a mutually beneficial association of Father and obedient Son which extends to every other human. The Bible says Jesus is the door and he has the key. There is one requirement to receive what Father and Son offer; accept the truth that Jesus died on the cross in the payment of death for Adam’s sin to free humanity from that bondage. Adam’s disobedience caused a default sentence of everlasting death. Ignorance of that law doesn’t count. Salvation from the sentence of eternal death comes only through Jesus Christ. Learning how to live in that symbiotic relationship comes by the seven spirits of YHVH; the Spirit of YHVH fills the obedient with wisdom to discern good and evil and do his work, knowledge of Him, understanding of His Spirit, strength to overcome the sin nature, counsel on how to persevere, and with all of that comes the deepest reverence and obeisance to the Lord.
Note: By now you are probably asking if I believe Jesus is God. Psalm 45 says, "Elohim, your Elohim." which means that Father (YHVH) and Son (Yeshuah) are both Elohim. Bibles usually translate as "God, your God." I prefer Elohim because it is specific and is the Hebrew word for Supreme God. Jesus is the son of YHVH, so yes, he is Elohim.
By accepting Jesus, what is there to lose but the knowledge of evil which is a harsh path to the fiery pit? Yes, many who don’t know Jesus as Lord and Savior do prosper financially and gain great recognition but what good is it to them if they have not listened to the truth and submitted to YHVH? Satan often uses the unsaved rich and famous to do his works in leading others away from the truth of the Word of YHVH. He also uses those who think they are saved Christians and aren’t. Ignorance is one of the seven spirits of antichrist. Satan wants the human race to remain ignorant and self centered.
The Word speaks very clearly about what YHVH expects from all of us. It is also very clear as to what YHVH will do to those who refuse Him. A once honored angel of heaven, Lucifer a.k.a. Satan, chose to go against YHVH. Then he twisted the truth and deceived a third of the angels in heaven causing a great war. He is doing the same thing here on earth which will also end in war and destruction of his followers. Satan is the premier terrorist and deceiver in this world. Everyone who gets caught in his web of deceit, like an unsuspecting fly, will be destroyed with him in the end. Salvation from destruction is a matter of conscious choice. Destruction comes by default, but salvation is by choosing to listen to the truth of Jesus and accepting it. The fear of YHVH looks really good when you understand what is really at stake; but that is from someone who loves the Lord with a full heart.
Here is YHVH’s promise to everyone who will listen and learn:
Note: The original Hebrew words YHVH and Elohim replace the words LORD and God.
Isaiah 1:17-19 (KJV)—
17. Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.
18. Come now, and let us reason together, says YHVH: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
19. If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:
The following are only a few examples of the seven spirits of YHVH found in the Bible.
2 Chronicles 19:7, 9—
7. Wherefore now let the fear of YHVH be upon you; take heed and do it: for there is no iniquity with YHVH our Elohim, nor respect of persons, nor taking of gifts.
9. And he charged them, saying, Thus shall ye do in the fear of YHVH, faithfully, and with a perfect heart.
Isaiah 30:1—
1. Woe to the rebellious children, says YHVH, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin:
Colossians 1:9—
9. For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
Ephesians 1:17—
17. That the Elohim of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory (YHVH), may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:
Ephesians 3:16—
16. That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;
Proverbs 2—Instructions concerning the spirits of Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Strength, Knowledge and the Fear of YHVH
1. My son, if you will receive my words, and hide my commandments with you;
2. So that you incline your ear to wisdom, [and] apply your heart to understanding;
3. Yea, if you cry after knowledge, [and] lift up your voice for understanding; (This would also be counsel)
4. If you seek her as silver, and search for her as [for] hidden treasures;
5. Then shall you understand the fear of YHVH (Yahavah), and find the knowledge of Elohim.
6. For YHVH (Yahavah) gives wisdom: out of his mouth [comes] knowledge and understanding.
7. He lays up sound wisdom for the righteous: [he is] a buckler to them that walk uprightly. (This would be strength)
8. He keeps the paths of judgment, and preserves the way of his saints.
9. Then shall you understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; [yea], every good path.
10. When wisdom enters into your heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto your soul; (Filled by the Spirit of YHVH)
11. Discretion shall preserve you, understanding shall keep you:
12. To deliver you from the way of the evil [man], from the man that speaks forward things;
13. Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness;
14. Who rejoice to do evil, [and] delight in the forwardness of the wicked;
15. Whose ways [are] crooked, and [they] forward in their paths:
16. To deliver you from the strange woman, [even] from the stranger [which] flatters with her words;
17. Which forsakes the guide of her youth, and forgets the covenant of her Elohim.
18. For her house inclines unto death, and her paths unto the dead.
19. None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life.
20. That you may walk in the way of good [men], and keep the paths of the righteous.
21. For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it.
22. But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it.
The Proverbs are mostly about the seven spirits and how they work in the life of the righteous and Isaiah 11:1-3 prophesied the anointing of the seven spirits on Jesus Christ. From childhood Jesus knew who his father was. When Isaiah’s prophecy was fulfilled Jesus was fully aware of his father’s commandments. His father was in him by the fullness of His Spirit. That fullness is in the form of the seven spirits of YHVH. Jesus listened and spoke the will of his father. He never turned right or left from the will of his father. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and with wisdom comes the understanding of the fear of YHVH and the knowledge of Elohim. It is a righteous root that grows and bears fruit for the glory and honor of YHVH and Yeshuah.
Proverbs 4—Prophetic instruction from YHVH’s Son, Yeshuah
1. Hear, you children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.
2. For I give you good doctrine, forsake not my law.
3. For I was my father's son, tender and only [beloved] in the sight of my mother.
4. He taught me also, and said unto me, Let your heart retain my words: keep my commandments,
and live.
5. Get wisdom, get understanding: forget [it] not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.
6. Forsake her not, and she shall preserve you: love her, and she shall keep you.
7. Wisdom [is] the principal thing; [therefore] get wisdom: and with all your getting get understanding.
8. Exalt her, and she shall promote you: she shall bring you to honor, when you embrace her.
9. She shall give to your head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to you.
10. Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of your life shall be many.
11. I have taught you in the way of wisdom; I have led you in right paths.
12. When you go, your steps shall not be in distress; and when you run, you shall not stumble.
13. Take fast hold of instruction; let [her] not go: keep her; for she [is] your life.
14. Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil [men].
15. Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.
16. For they sleep not, except they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away,
unless they cause [some] to fall.
17. For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence.
18. But the path of the just [is] as the shining light, that shines more and more unto the perfect day.
19. The way of the wicked [is] as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.
20. My son, attend to my words; incline your ear unto my sayings.
21. Let them not depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart.
22. For they [are] life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.
23. Keep your heart with all diligence; for out of it [are] the issues of life.
24. Put away from you a false mouth, and perverse lips put far from you.
25. Let your eyes look right on, and let your eyelids look straight before you.
26. Ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established.
27. Turn neither to the right hand nor to the left: remove your foot from evil.
THE SEVEN SPIRITS AT WORK IN THE BODY OF CHRIST
The Book of Revelation is not just about the return of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. This message from God is a letter of stewardship. He is putting the rest of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the hands of the Body of Christ to hear and protect. It is part the Great Commission. It is part of teaching the people the truth about the Father, Son, and Spirit of YHVH, a.k.a. Holy Spirit.
There are many false doctrines being taught about the Revelation. Teachers of false doctrine are false prophets caught up in their own wisdom and understanding. False prophets do not listen to the Spirit or ask for the wisdom and understanding of YHVH, nor do they know how to test the spirit of what they think, hear, see, and do. If they did, they would find their own errors and the errors of their predecessors which they believe to be truth.
If you believe that all sixty-six books of the Bible are the inspired Word of YHVH, a.k.a. God, you must also believe what Jesus taught his disciples that the Spirit of YHVH is the comforter, teacher, protector and constant companion of all believers who deeply love his Son, Jesus Christ. The Spirit of YHVH, who is the person of YHVH, is the only one who can use the keys within the pages of the Revelation to unlock the prophecies, symbols and riddles of the Bible. The reader who has not received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and the anointing of the Spirit of YHVH, neither has the wisdom or understanding to gain knowledge from this book in the way it is intended.
Isaiah prophesied Jesus’ anointment in the Spirit of YHVH (Isaiah 11:1-3). Verse 2 explains what the anointment is:
“The Spirit of YHVH will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of
understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of
knowledge and of the fear of YHVH.”
Believers are anointed in the same seven attributes (the seven spirits of YHVH) of the Spirit.
Rev. 5:6—
"a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of YHVH (Yahavah) sent forth into all the earth."
This anointment in the Spirit is the fullness of the Spirit by which a believer is to live.
The Spirit of YHVH is the giver of wisdom, understanding, counsel, knowledge and power. The fear of the Lord is the end result. No believer in Jesus Christ can survive without this full anointment. Believers need discernment given by the Spirit.
Revelation Chapters 1 through 5–The Foundation of Jesus Christ
The Book of Revelation has a particular structure and rhythm that creates a beautiful harmony of words and images. It sings to the spirit and floods the soul with the love of the Lord.
There is a great deal to learn about the Christian walk from Revelation’s seven letters. The letters exhort the churches (of all eras) to listen to the Spirit. Not listening to the Spirit is the unforgiveable sin that leads to false doctrine, a lukewarm Christian walk and ultimately eternal death. The Proverbs exhort us to listen and learn.
Each of the seven churches has the seven Spirits, but each letter is about one of the seven spirits of YHVH.
Rev. 1:1-20—The angel of the Lord is dressed in garments that define the Redeemer.
Rev. 2:1—3:22—The seven letters to the seven churches define the work of the Spirit of YHVH. The Spirit tells them where they excel and fail in their Christian walk under the anointing of the Spirit.
Rev. 4:1—5:14—Christ ascended into heaven to receive glory and honor.
The Letter to Ephesus (synopsis)—
Theme: Ambassadors of the Kingdom of YHVH
Choices: Spirit of YHVH vs. spirit of antichrist (sin)
Vs 1:20—The seven lampstands are the churches and the seven stars are their messengers or pastors, both being the same. All belongs to YHVH. What belongs to YHVH, he gave to His son, Jesus Christ, when he ascended to be glorified.
Born again Christians are stewards of what belongs to Jesus. In vv 2 and 3 He says “go back to what you were.” At the beginning of their church they tested the spirit of the teachings of apostles who came to them. Then they fell away from THSD! They stopped testing the spirit of what they Think, Hear, See, and Do by the Word of YHVH. The Spirit says, overcome the tempter or lose your church and possibly your place with Him.
The Letter to Smyrna (synopsis)—
Theme: Christ is the wisdom of YHVH
Choices: Spirit of YHVH’s Wisdom vs. spirit of sin’s folly (human wisdom)
1 Corinthians 1:30—
"But of him are you in Christ Jesus, who of YHVH is made to us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: "
John 16:33—
Jesus said, “These things I have spoken to you, that in me you might have peace. In the world you shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”
The Jews in this letter blaspheme the Spirit of YHVH by not listening to the truth that Jesus is Messiah. They depend on the Law and human wisdom. Any who follow their example will persecute those who listen to YHVH’s wisdom, especially in the prophesied time of Antichrist and the tribulation. He says no matter what kind of tribulation or when, stand firm in the cross of Christ and the anointing of the Spirit to the death. Everlasting life with Jesus is your reward.
The Letter to Pergamos (synopsis)—
Theme: Discerning good and evil by the Word and Spirit
Choices: Spirit of YHVH’s Understanding vs. spirit of sin’s error
The sharp two-edged sword is the Word of YHVH.
Matthew 10:33, 34, 37—
33. “But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
34. Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
37. He that loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loves son or daughter
more than me is not worthy of me.”
Satan’s seat is anywhere that sin is rampant among the people. Balaam didn’t listen to the Spirit speaking through his donkey (Deut. 23:4-6). In the same way as Balaam, the Nicolaitans did not listen to the Spirit and would not repent. The Nicolaitans practiced Hellenism in the temple. They ate things sacrificed to their idols and committed fornication with the temple whores. They tried to incorporate their idolatry into Israel’s worship of YHVH and into Christianity. They did not listen to the truth so as to repent. It was still the time of Roman rule and influence and for some their faith wavered. YHVH will recompense with the Word of His mouth as a sharp two-edged sword.
The Letter To Thyatira (synopsis)
Theme: The government of YHVH
Choices: Spirit of YHVH’s Counsel vs. spirit of sin’s deceit (lying counsel of Satan)
The world says that sex between consenting adults outside of marriage is natural and okay. And so what if you’re married. Nobody has to know what is done secretly in the dark. NOT SO!! YHVH KNOWS!! And his eyes burn with the flame of jealousy for you. He does not want to lose one soul to Satan.
Hormones are hard to fight and it’s easy to find excuses to satisfy them under the terms of the world. Raging hormones make it easy to listen to the lying counsel of Satan; even for those who know he prowls about to deceive anyone he can. Those are the times to remember how much you love Jesus and show him how much you appreciate what he did for you. Self control is one of the fruits of the Spirit spoken of in Galatians 5:16-25
The Son of YHVH died on the cross in our place to give us the power in the Spirit of YHVH to overcome Satan’s deceit. Jesus said he overcame the world for us. Now all we have to do is stand firm in that truth. No one said it would be easy. The letter to the Hebrews makes that very clear.
The Letter To Sardis (synopsis)—
Theme: The administration of the mystery of YHVH
Choices: Spirit of YHVH’s Strength vs. spirit of sin’s pride
There are churches who are Christian in name only. They believe but had no depth of Spirit. They do many good works creating an image of life but filled with pride for doing so. Any who profess the name of Jesus and do not live in the power of the seven spirits are dead in their works. Two prominent Bible examples of occasions where the Spirit did not fall on the people who said they believed are:
The first is Acts 8:4-24—the case of the Samarian sorcerer who wanted to buy the power of the Spirit of YHVH. The Spirit didn’t fall on any of the believers in Samaria who heard the truth through Philip. YHVH wanted to expose the sorcerer before anointing the true believers.
The other is Acts 19:2-6—While in Corinth, Apollos taught only the baptism of John. When Paul came through He perceived that the Spirit had not fallen on them. He asked if they had heard about the Spirit of YHVH and they had not. So Paul told them about Jesus and they then were baptized in the name of Jesus and received the Spirit of YHVH.
Church congregations and pastors can go on for years not knowing the whole truth or denying some of it. Sadly, their works are dead in the eyes of YHVH but they may appear alive to those who don’t know the truth. If they do not repent their names will be wiped from the Book of Life.
The Letter To Philadelphia (synopsis)—
Theme: A Kingdom of priests
Choices: Spirit of YHVH’s Knowledge vs. spirit of sin’s ignorance
This letter is about receiving the knowledge of Father, Son and the Spirit of YHVH. No one may enter the kingdom of YHVH without it. It is about loving the Lord with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength and loving your neighbor as you love yourself. The truth shall set them free.
The context of the Great Commission is for disciples to go out and make new disciples by teaching others to observe what Jesus taught his twelve. He told them to immerse them in the truth and the authority of the Father and Son in the power of the Spirit of YHVH. Something to always remember; Jesus has the key to open or close the door leading to his Father.
IMMERSED (Baptized) IN THE WATER OF HIS WORD:
• Father as regards—living every word that proceeds from His mouth.—WATER
• Son as regards—The ransom He paid for our freedom by His blood.—BLOOD
• Holy Spirit as regards—the free gift to all the captives who desire freedom through Jesus for power
over sin and to dedicate life and mind to worship and serve Yahavah.—SPIRIT
1 John 5:6, 8—
6. This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood.

And it is the Spirit that bears witness, because the Spirit is truth….
8. And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these
three agree in one
The Letter to Laodicea (synopsis)—
Theme: You shall have not other god before Me
Choices: Spirit of the fear of YHVH vs. spirit of sin’s idolatry
Laodicea was located in the southwestern region of ancient Phrygia in Asia-Minor. The city was named by the Hellenic ruler Antiochus II (262-246 B.C.) for his wife, Laodice, which means conquer the people. The city grew to great prominence and wealth during Roman rule. One of its noted trade items was a poultice widely sought for treatment of eye ailments.
This church is neither hot nor cold. They are complacent. They are content with a little knowledge and have become self-righteous. Their eyes and ears are closed. Their zeal for the Lord is stagnant. They think they don’t need to fellowship with each other and YHVH through Bible studies. They know what they think they need to know and that’s enough. But, they have not been weaned from the milk. They believe in Jesus and have their salvation, they think! Yet he stands at the door knocking to come in. Sadly, their hospitality is lacking by leaving him outside.
A simple invitation and acceptance will fill them with the Spirit and make them hot with the zeal for the Lord.
Repent and live!!
